Is this the start of the Marvel cinematic universe and the DC movie universe going to war?
NewsSo this will go down well. The ongoing debate over whether Marvel or DC rules supreme in the world of cinema seems, with the current generation of films, fairly one-sided. Since Christopher Nolan completed his excellent Dark Knight trilogy, Warner Bros has just Man Of Steel to show for its comic book efforts. Marvel? Well technically it starts its phase three of films with July's Ant-Man. That's its twelfth movie.
Battle doesn't really commence though until next year, when Warner Bros unleashes Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice and Suicide Squad. But that hasn't stopped Warner Bros' chairman and CEO doing a bit of crowing.
Kevin Tsujihara told the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media & Telecom Conference (er, really) that "the worlds of DC are very different."
He added that "they're steeped in realism, and they're a little bit edgier than Marvel's movies."
Whilst we're some way away from judging how the films of the new DC movie universe have fared, we can't help but note that when Kevin Feige and Marvel make announcements, they do it in a fan-friendly way. Kevin Tsujihara basically announced the DC movie universe to investors first, as we recall.
"The key thing is that the movies and the television shows and the games, everything looks different... you have to be able to take advantage of the diversity of these characters", he added. "The big franchises are becoming more and more valuable. You don't have to explain to the consumer what a 'Batman V Superman' is."
Hmmm. On the flip side, you did have to explain who the Guardians Of The Galaxy were to audiences, and well, you saw what happened there.
We're really looking forward to seeing what DC has done with its assorted properties. We can't help feeling though that the time to start talking about whose films are edgier is, well, when you have a few more films out. Show your cards, rather than tell everyone what they're like...
