Don't worry, male Ghostbusters fans. The studio has heard your cries, and they're making a version just for you...
NewsHere's the short version: Ivan Reitman, Dan Aykroyd, and Channing Tatum have formed a new production company (Ghostcorps) to develop another Ghostbustersmovie. Joe and Anthony Russo are working on it with Drew Pearce (Iron Man 3) will produce another Ghostbustersfilm for Sony.
But is it another Ghostbustersmovie? Ghostcorps is set to exploit branding opportunities for the franchise, and this movie is set in that universe, but may or may not actually be a sequel to the actual Ghostbustersmovie that Paul Feig is putting together. That's the one with the all-female cast that seems to get the internet up in arms every time we mention it for some reason.
Make no mistake, though: this is still not Ghostbusters 3. The Feig Ghostbusters movie is very much ground zero for this new franchise.
“We want to expand the Ghostbustersuniverse in ways that will include different films, TV shows, merchandise, all things that are part of modern filmed entertainment,” Ivan Reitman told Deadline.“This is a branded entertainment, a scary supernatural premise mixed with comedy. Paul Feig’s film will be the first version of that, shooting in June to come out in July 2016. He’s got four of the funniest women in the world, and there will be other surprises to come. The second film has a wonderful idea that builds on that. Drew will start writing and the hope is to be ready for the Russo Brothers’ next window next summer to shoot, with the movie coming out the following year. It’s just the beginning of what I hope will be a lot of wonderful movies.”
It sounds like the "shared Ghostbusters universe" that Dan Aykroyd envisioned is finally becoming a reality. Those three words should bug you far more than "all female cast."
In all seriousness, though, just as surely as Paul Feig and Katie Dippold (not to mention their cast of all-star funny ladies) seem like a good fit for this brand of humor, so does this team. Here's hoping it works out and that Sony handles this particular "shared universe" and franchise better than they did with Spider-Man.
It looks like we can expect the new Ghostbusters 2 (it's not Ghostbusters 3or 4, after all) in the summer of 2017. That's assuming it's even called "Ghostbusters" at all...
UPDATE: Badass Digest reports that not only is Channing Tatum involved, Chris Pratt might be as well. What's more, Sony currently have plans for four Ghostbusters movies in total. The Paul Feig movie, this one, a potential "team-up" movie with members of both casts, and a prequel.
