What do Common, Tyrese Gibson, and Chris Pine have in common? They're all linked to Green Lantern in some way.
NewsOne of these days, Warner Bros. is going to have to cast a new Green Lantern to introduce in either Justice League Part Oneor Part Two. We'll start with the most firm bit of information about who will play Green Lantern in the Justice League movie, and then move on down the line. Here's a safe bet: it isn't Ryan Reynolds. Now, on to some of the other potential guys with potential to wear the ring...
Common was once actually cast as Green Lantern John Stewart, in a Justice League movie that came so close to production that sets were built and costumes were fitted. This was Mad Max director George Miller's Justice League: Mortal that stalled back in 2007. Even though that one never happened, he'd still consider doing it.
"I would love to be John Stewart and play Green Lantern," Common told Screen Rant. "That was one of those things where I was so excited because we rarely see African-American superheroes or people of colour as a superhero. I think it would be great for the world to see, and for people to see, and for Hollywood to put that out there, too. But just for the world to see, just for kids to be able to see, for all nationalities to see a person of color as a superhero, too...Unfortunately it didn't happen at that time. But maybe the possibility is that it could. I would love to."
For what it's worth, there's been buzz that Warner Bros. wants their Justice League to be as diverse as possible. Inserting the John Stewart version of Green Lantern would certainly help this, and has the added bonus of distancing them even further from the failed 2011 Green Lantern movie, which starred Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan.
Fast and Furious star Tyrese Gibson has been campaigning pretty hard on social media for a role as John Stewart. He apparently even went so far as to set up a meeting at Warner Bros. to discuss things. We don't know how those went.
Finally, Latino Review believe that Warner Bros. are considering the Hal Jordan Green Lantern after all, and that they've got their eye on Chris Pine as a possibility. Since we're still some time off from production on Justice League Part One, they still have time to make up their minds.
I'm still willing to bet that they're going to go the John Stewart route. Either way, we'll probably meet our new Green Lantern when Justice League Part Onearrives on November 17th, 2017. The Green Lantern solo movie is due on June 19th, 2020. Our complete DC superhero movie release calendar is here.
