"I always regretted I made a Marvel movie this way," says Punisher: War Zone director Lexi Alexander.
NewsThe third attempt to make a success of The Punisher on the big screen - Punisher: War Zone - was released to not much acclaim back in 2008. The movie starred Ray Stevenson as Frank Castle, and while it is has its fans, it failed to kickstart a series of movies, and has long since been marked down as a disappointment.
Not least by its director, Lexi Alexander. She's been addressing the film on her blog, and was asked about working on the project. Specifically, how her collaboration with Marvel Studios was.
"My relationship with them was different than those of the other filmmakers they work with because Lionsgate had the rights to Punisher and paid for the movie," she said.
"Marvel was an equal partner, but unfortunately when there were creative decision conflicts, Marvel would let Lionsgate be the tie breaker. I always regretted that I made a Marvel movie this way, because 99% of their notes were much better than the studios and I was more in tune with them."
She added that "I doubt any director gets final cut these days, but certainly not a director on a Marvel property."
Alexander's blog is well worth a read, incidentally. You can find it here.
