Andrew Garfield has a lifelong love for Spider-Man. Now, he wants to explore the web head’s love life in a completely unique way.
Garfield, never one to shy away from reinterpreting a character already beloved from the performances of other actors, told Entertainment Weekly on the set of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 some of his ideas for the future of Spidey films.
“I was kind of joking, but kind of not joking about MJ,” he said of a conversation he once had with Producer Matt Tolmach. “And I was like, ‘What if MJ is a dude?’ Why can’t we discover that Peter is exploring his sexuality? It’s hardly even groundbreaking!…So why can’t he be gay? Why can’t he be into boys?”
He further joked that he has long been “obsessed” with Michael B. Jordan of The Wire and Chronicle. “We’d have interracial bisexuality,” he exclaimed to EW. Marc Webb also said in an interview that he’s heard Garfield’s theory. A lot.
Personally, I think this is a bit of humorous hypothesizing from an actor with a cheeky sense of humor. But why not? It seems evident they are likely going to recast Mary Jane Watson for The Amazing Spider-Man 3. So why not as a man? What do the fans think.
