Disney has tapped the writer/director of Listen Up Philip to bring the story of Winnie the Pooh and Christopher Robin to live-action.

News

As of late, most attention has been paid to the fairy tale classics of Disney’s vault, with live-action retellings of Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, and Alice in Wonderland gobbling up box office records. But even as anticipation is already growing for a new Beauty and the Beast starring Emma Watson and a live-action Mulan, the House of Mouse is moving on to adapting non-folklore based childhood touchstones like...Winnie The Pooh?!

Yes, a live-action Winnie The Pooh is becoming a new priority at Disney, as it was announced Thursday that the studio is intending to make a new version of the character that utilizes recent technology (i.e. CGI), which makes a “live-action” Tigger possible. Indeed, the studio has tapped Alex Ross Perry, the writer and director of last year’s quizzical indie dramedy about the agonies of literary invention, Listen Up Philip, to readapt Pooh bear for the big screen.

The focus will be on a now-adult Christopher Robin returning to the Hundred Acre wood and rediscovering his childhood friend, Winnie the Pooh. While the approach sounds refreshingly strange (then again, so did Hook and Alice in Wonderland, which this premise bears striking similarities to), the idea of putting this Pooh Bear in live-action seems like it might be a bridge too far. Yet, we will just have to wait as this project develops before guessing too much about what’s in this honey pot.
