It sounds like Idris Elba is in the next Star Trek movie, but he might not be playing who you think he is...
The Latest News
Star Trek 3 (or Star Trek 13, depending on your preference) may have a title: Star Trek Beyond. It fits with the general "no numbers" rule the franchise has gone along with. Trek Movie broke the news, and they've been on the money with their Trek sourcing.
New Characters
A while back, reports had surfaced that a "Bryan Cranston-like" villain was sought for the film. How "Cranston-like?" He apparently had a chat with the studio. It seems that Idris Elba is in "early talks" for a villainous role. The idea of Elba playing a Star Trek villain is appealing enough. If he's a cool and evil Heisenberg type, all the better.
Varietybelieves that Klingons may be involved, but this doesn't necessarily mean Elba is playing one. Simon Pegg denied that Elba's character is a Klingon, however. See for yourself:
He did, however, confirm that Elba is playing a villain, and that "We're trying to write him a kick-ass role!" That sounds exciting. Something tells me that Mr. Pegg and friends are going to be quite cautious about falling down the rabbit hole of lies and more lies that JJ Abrams did with the villain of Star Trek Into Darkness. At least I hope so.
Film Divider(who first reported the villain news in the first place) also broke the news a while back about other potential new characters. For one thing, Star Trek 3 should introduce three major female characters. How major? One is a Federation starship captain, while the other is the President of the United Federation of Planets. The third would be Doctor McCoy's ex-wife, possibly either Jocelyn Treadway or Pamela Branch. Kingsman's Sofia Boutella appears to have snagged one of those roles.
The Rest
The new Star Trek movie is directed by Justin Lin. It's set for a July 8th, 2016 release date. Simon Pegg and Doug Jung are working on the script.
