Ex Machina has unveiled a disturbing new trailer about the advances of artificial intelligence just as the film's release nears...
This weekend, the first must-see science fiction film of the year is expanding into theaters nationwide. And as Alex Garland’s Ex Machina, a film that we found to be dizzyingly visionary in our review, shares its erotic nightmare of artificial intelligence, A24 is only too happy to also release the below new trailer.
In the latest video, the filmmakers’ influences, from Elon Musk to Stephen Hawking, are used to contextualize the kind of sci-fi nightmares that Garland is reaching for. Indeed, we had a lengthy conversation with stars Oscar Isaac and Alicia Vikander earlier this month on that very subject.
Pulling from the great sci-fi traditions of Isaac Asimov or Philip K. Dick, with a little bit of gothic horror thrown thanks to overt Frankenstein parallels (and perhaps some subtler Bram Stoker ones as well), Ex Machina creates a taut thriller about the deceptively simple execution of a Turing test—which is to prove artificial intelligence exists.
When Caleb (Domhnall Gleeson) is invited by his mercurial CEO Nathan (Isaac) to a mysterious and undisturbed country estate, the young man soon discovers he is allowed only in certain rooms. And in one of them, he meets Ava (Vikander), a likely sentient robot. Nathan insists that Caleb is there to perform a Turing test on Ava, but it quickly becomes apparent that there is more to this experiment than meets the eye.
Ex Machina opens in theaters around the country on Friday, April 24th and you can watch the trailer by clicking here.
