Sony and Marvel will bring fans an animated Spider-Man movie in 2018, with a killer creative team, and it's in-continuity.
Well, it's certainly a good time to be a Spider-Man fan.
Hot on the heels of news that five talented young actors (including Asa Butterfield) are in the running for Peter Parker, comes what might be an even bigger announcement: LEGO Movie masterminds Phil Lord and Chris Miller are working on an animated Spider-Man movie. The pair will write the treatment and produce the film. Whether they end up directing or not remains to be seen.
The new Spider-Man animated movie may or may not be in continuity with the Marvel Cinematic Universe...reports out of CinemaCon in Las Vegas (where Sony's Tom Rothman made the announcement). If it is, though, this would mark the first time that Marvel has "officially" crossed into animation with its ever-increasing slate of superhero movies. Presumably, the actor who lands the part of Peter Parker for Captain America: Civil War and the first Marvel/Sony Spider-Man movie (due in 2017) will provide the voice for this one.
The currently untitled Spider-Man animated movie will be released on July 20th, 2018.
This is a developing story, so please come back for more details as they become available. Some details remain unclear as of this writing, including the status of this movie in relation to Sony's deal with Marvel, and its place in the Marvel Universe.
