Doug Liman has exited the Splinter Cell adaptation, but Tom Hardy remains attached as Sam Fisher with the helmer of "Power/Rangers" joining.

News

It continues to be really hard getting a good film based off a video game made, doesn’t it? While there have been impressive films influenced by the gamer’s aesthetic, none have been based directly on a brand. New Regency and Ubisoft’s upcoming Splinter Cell movie seems like it could be one to break the mold, not least of all because Doug Liman (who directed the very game-inspired Edge of Tomorrow) was scheduled to direct. Well, back to level one on that front.

While Tom Hardy is still lined up to play Sam Fisher, it will not be in a Doug Liman film, as the Bourne Identity filmmaker has exited the project.

However, lest fans fret too much, New Regency already has its eye on a replacement. According to The Tracking Board, Joseph Kahn is expected to take the helm of the video game film. Fans of a certain variety should be familiar with Kahn’s work, if not the name, since he directed the infamous Power Rangers short fan film/parody, “Power/Rangers.” He also led the publicity campaign to get it back on the Internet after Saban Entertainment had it taken down because of copyright infringement. Kahn has also directed music videos for U2, Britney Spears, Taylor Swift (including the recently released “Blank Space”), and the early 2004 motorcycle movie Torque.

The movie is still in development with Basil Iwanyk and David Bartis still producing, as well as Jean-Julien Baronet of the newly created Ubisoft Motion Pictures.
