Maybe we'll get to see The Last Starfighter 2 (or something like it) after all...

News

The fact that The Last Starfighter, a movie generally beloved by nostalgic science fiction enthusiasts never got a sequel never seemed like that much of a mystery. It really wasn't enough of a hit upon its 1984 release to warrant one.

But as more and more films from decades past get slated for more and more belated sequels, hope has sprung up from time to time for The Last Starfighter 2 or some other similar revisitation to finally happen. As recently as March, the problem appeared to be a difficult tangle of rights issues. Seth Rogen had expressed interest, and not even Steven Spielberg was able to get things off the ground. We have more on that right here.

In an excellent article on Yahoo! Movies detailing how The Last Starfighter went from box-office disappointment to cult favorite, the writer of the original film, Jonathan Betuel gives fans a little hope. I wouldn't say he gives any actual details, but it does at least sound like there's something cooking in Rylos.

There are a lot of things going on that will see the light of day,” he promised. “It’s complicated, it’s great, it’s a privilege, and it’s going to be taken care of… It’s good to be working with a team that wants to see it go. I think that the story deserves to continue.”

That piece on Yahoo! Movies is well worth your time, by the way. Go read it.
