Director Elizabeth Banks admits that thoughts have already started turning towards a third Pitch Perfect movie...
NewsOver the weekend, Pitch Perfect 2 became Universal's latest huge hit in what's set to be one hell of a year for the studio. As things stand, it's already seen Fast & Furious 7 become the fourth biggest film of all time at the global box office (it should cross $1.5 billion this week), while the likes of Minions and Jurassic World are already queued up too.
And then, Pitch Perfect 2 snared $70.3 millon in its US opening weekend, comfortably ahead of Mad Max: Fury Road's $44.4 million opening. Add in non-US takings, and Pitch Perfect 2 has already crossed $100 million. Then throw in the soundtrack sales, and Universal's Christmas party just got even more impressive.
We'd already learned earlier in the year that plans were afoot for Pitch Perfect 3, and director Elizabeth Banks has been chatting about a further sequel to Collider. In an interview that took place before the release of the second film, she admitted that "it would be disingenuous to say that no one’s talking about a Pitch Perfect 3."
"We are really focused on getting as many butts in seats for this one. If fans embrace it, we are going to seriously think about what the continuing journey would look like, but we don’t know what that is yet," she said, noting that "I don’t know what the story of the third one is yet. So I can’t say… but I’m excited to delve in and figure it out."
We would imagine that a Universal executive is frantically jabbing the greenlight button this morning, and that all concerned will be keen to get Pitch Perfect 3 moving really rather quickly. More as we hear it...
