Peter Sarsgaard has been cast opposite Denzel Washington and Chris Pratt in Antoine Fuqua's The Magnificent Seven remake.
NewsYou have to give the latest remake of a Hollywood classic some credit: it's developing quite the cast.
Yes indeed, while we're still some time out from Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke, and Vincent D'Onofrio's triumphant ride into town, Antoine Fuqua, MGM, and Sony have already upped the ante by adding Peter Sarsgaard to The Magnificent Seven cast. However, whereas most of the names added to the film to date have been about joining the fabled seven heroes, Sarsgard was revealed by Variety on Wednesday to play the gold-lusting villain.
In this veresion of the yarn, rather than being set in a desperate Mexican villiage, the Magnificent Seven will ride into a mining town that is being held hostage by a gold baron (Sarsgaard) with control over the mine. Sarsgaard seems like a reliable choice, as he has played plenty of villains before, including in 2011's Green Lantern. However, I have always appreciated Sarsgaard when he's allowed to do some more interesting character work a la Kinsey or Blue Jasmine. Maybe The Magnificent Seven will also offer such opportunities? After all, True Detective's Nic Pizzolatto wrote the original screenplay (which has since been reworked by John Lee Hancock), so there's a great starting point. Not to mention the original film or its Seven Samurai inspiration before that...
Of course, Yul Brynner would be nice too.
