The producer of Conan the Barbarian 3, well, really, The Legend of Conan, talks a little about the tone of the film.
NewsWe've known for some time that the third movie in Arnold Schwarzenegger's Conan franchise, The Legend of Conan, would be a direct sequel to the first film, Conan the Barbarian. Look at it this way: you can pretend that Conan the Destroyernever happened, and you can certainly forget about the Jason Momoa led reboot from 2011.
But now Chris Morgan, who is both co-writer and producer of The Legend of Conan, has been offering a few updates about what to expect in the next Conan movie.
"When we meet him again, Conan has been many things over the course of his life — a thief, a warrior, a pirate, a king, a legend — and is now an older man. Think Unforgiven…with a sword-wielding barbarian."
That sounds about right. Robert E. Howard's Conan mythology always spanned the character's lengthy career, so this is certainly a case where zooming on in him later in life seems like it could work. Why this means we need to ignore the b-movie fun of Conan the Destroyer is beyond me, but I'm not the one making the film.
Morgan promises that everyone involved "are all first-generation fans who either worked on the film or who came along for the ride, cheering from their theater seats opening night. We plan nothing more than to immerse ourselves in the world Milius envisioned from Robert E. Howard’s unforgettable stories and Frank Frazetta’s stunning artwork." That's rather encouraging, too.
He also promises that "at least three" characters from the original film will return. There's a chance that The Legend of Conan could go into production as early as this fall. This one has been a slow burner, so I wouldn't be surprised if there are more delays, but you never know.
The entire interview is over at The Arnold Fans and it's definitely worth a read.
