The Martian Cast
Back in May 2014, when Ridley Scott boarded the project as the film’s director, Matt Damon signed on to star in The Martian. On September 3, 2014, Jessica Chastain joined the cast Melissa Lewis, the female lead and a fellow astronaut.
Later that month, Mackenzie Davis, Kate Mara, and Michael Pena all signed on. Davis plays the “small but crucial” role as Mindy Park, whereas Mara and Pena will portray Beth Johanssen and Major Ricky Martinez respectively.
In October, the film secured their NASA characters, bringing on Jeff Daniels to play the director of NASA, Teddy Sanders, and Sean Bean as NASA Flight Director Mitch Henderson. Comedian and rapper Donald Glover and Aksel Hennie also boarded the project as young NASA employees.
The film will also star Kristen Wiig as a NASA spokeswoman, Sebastian Stan as Dr. Chris Beck, and Chiwetel Ejiofor as Venkat Kapoor, the director of the Mars Mission.
The Martian Plot Details

During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive.
Drew Goddard adapted the script from Andy Weir’s novel.
The Martian Images
The first images of The Martian have been released, featuring on-set photos of the film’s star, Matt Damon, and many members of the cast. In the photos, we can see the southern Jordan landscape, Wadi Rum, also known as the Valley of the Moon, standing in for the Red Planet. The Martian Release Date
The Martian is set to hit theaters November 25, 2015 in the Untied States, distributed by 20th Century Fox. It comes less than a week after the concluding film in the Hunger Games saga, Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part II, and the same day as Pixar’s The Good Dinosaur, and the Rocky spin-off, Creed.
