Fox taps writer and director of next month's Kick-Ass 2 to bring X-Force to the big screen.

Jeff Wadlow is, for the moment, still a director whose name is not that well known even in the geekiest of fanboy circles. Sure, he has directed features like Cry_Wolfand Never Back Down. He even wrote two episodes of Bates Motel. Yet, the writer/director is still relatively unheard of in the geek community.

Well, that just changed. Wadlow, who is preparing for his mainstream debut with this August’s Kick-Ass 2, has just been tapped by Fox to direct one of the new X-Men spin-offs in development. Yes, Wadlow will be adapting X-Force to the big screen.

With the same producing team, led by Lauren Shuller Donner, of the original X-films, X-Force will branch off with its basis on the X-Force comic books from the early 1990s. In those issues, a team of “New Mutants” led by Cable, a time traveling militant anti-hero with a cyborg arm, fought the good fight and saved the day. The first issue sold five million copies back in the golden era of overzealous comic collecting.

This news comes on the heels of reports that Fox registered X-ForceMovie.com several months ago.

Wadlow, who also wrote Kick-Ass 2 as an adaptation of the Mark Millar/John Romita Jr. book of the same name, has clearly made a good impression on the Scottish Millar. Consider that Millar was tapped by Fox to oversee the studio’s “Marvel Cinematic Universe” (separate from Marvel’s own MCU at Disney) just last year. At the very least, it shows an approval of the direction for Kick-Ass 2.
