How about a giant robot sequel that won't disappoint you? Pacific Rim 2 is happening!

In the best news we've heard all week, Guillermo del Toro has confirmed that Pacific Rim 2 is happening with a scheduled release date of April 7th, 2017. There's even more good news, though. He's also developing a Pacific Rim animated series that will be unveiled some time between now and the Pacific Rim 2 release.

Check out the video announcement from Mr. del Toro right here:

This isn't the first we've heard of Pacific Rim 2. We already knew he was working on a script for the sequel with Zak Penn, for which he promised "very new, very crazy ideas." But in his latest statement, the director elaborated further:

“The characters I love will return. Raleigh, Mako, Newt, Gottlieb and who knows, maybe even Hannibal Chau – but we are taking them into a fresh territory that will display amazing sights and battles. The first film set the stage and now we’re ready to have a blast.”

NOW you're ready to have a blast, Mr. del Toro? We had a bit of a blast at the first one. While the first Pacific Rim didn't set the US box-office on fire, it did quite well internationally. We have long suspected that if it had a more recognizable "brand name" (like Robotech, Voltron, or...Transformers) attached to it, we wouldn't have had to wait this long for confirmation. Anyway, it doesn't matter. It's happening. That's a good thing.

In the meantime, we'll get more of Guillermo del Toro in October of 2015 with Crimson Peak.

Thanks to BuzzFeed, who have apparently become the official source for all Pacific Rim 2 news.
