Director Guillermo del Toro has one more small budgeted creature feature on his plate before Pacific Rim 2.
Undoubtedly, certain corners of the Internet rejoiced with glee when news came last month that there would indeed be a Pacific Rim 2. And with a 2017 release date set, at first glance it would appear that writer/director Guillermo del Toro would have his hands full. However, that doesn’t mean he cannot fit another creature feature in on the side. Especially a small budget black and white one….
While talking with Collider, del Toro revealed his production plans for the next few years including this smaller project.
“Right away, in February/March, I should [start on] another very small movie, black and white,” del Toro said. “Really, really bizarre before starting—we start pre-production on Pacific Rim 2 in August, and then I interrupt it briefly to go into the first of next year to do this strange little movie, and then I restart it and go all the way until we start shooting Pacific Rim 2 at the end of 2015 for release in 2017.”
Del Toro also confirmed that there would be one creature in the movie, and that he hopes to have John Hurt appear.
“I would love to have John Hurt, and there’s an actress that I have in mind that is not well-known, but I’ve seen her in a short film.”
If you follow the above link, del Toro’s excitement for the change of pace comes shining through in even the text. With its black and white context and focus on a smaller cast, we are hoping for something closer to a little girl in a labyrinth for this one instead of a giant robot smashing up a city.
