The remake of of the cult ’70s slasher thriller arrives in October.

We’ve been hearing about the remake of The Town that Dreaded Sundown for a while now – the movie was shot in the spring of 2013 – and now we’ve got a trailer for the film, which will have its world premiere at Austin’s Fantastic Fest next week before opening a month later. The original picture came out in 1976 and was loosely based on a series of real killings that took place in Texarkana back in the 1940s. The new film is set in the present, as a new rash of similar murders begins, so technically this might be more of a sequel to the original film than a reboot.

The new Town is a co-production of Ryan Murphy (American Horror Story) and Jason Blumhouse (Paranormal Activity, Insidious) so it will be interesting to see how their two styles of screen terror mesh. The trailer is certainly atmospheric and does capture a bit of the quirky, oddball flavor of the original, which is quite good on its own terms and in its own way influential on the slasher genre. Directed by Alfonso Gomez-Rejon, the new film stars Addison Timlin (Odd Thomas), the awesome Veronica Cartwright (Alien) and, in one of his last appearances, the late, great character actor Ed Lauter.

The Town that Dreaded Sundown opens on October 16.
