Is Ethan Hawke the lead in Marvel's Doctor Strange movie? It's possible, and we're looking into it.

We're very careful about reporting rumor over here, but this one appears to have some legs. This is Infamousare reporting that Ethan Hawke has been cast in the title role of Marvel's Doctor Strange movie. They seem fairly certain that he has, in fact, been cast in the role, and now it's just a question of locking in the details of the traditional Marvel six movie deal.

For what it's worth, one of our own sources casually mentioned Ethan Hawke as part of the conversation for Doctor Strange while we were discussing something else entirely several weeks ago. At the time, it didn't even seem worth reporting, as I was also told that the only thing holding up an official Joaquin Phoenix announcement were contractual details. This is probably still the case, but that doesn't mean Marvel isn't speaking to other actors, as production is set to begin on Doctor Strange in the next few months. In other words, they need to get moving, and why not goose things along?

If this is true, Mr. Hawke would certainly make sense for a number of reasons. For starters, he's a fine actor with an impressive list of roles to his credit (I always like to bring up the generally underappreciated Gattaca), and he's already worked with Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson on Sinister. He's also a fine physical match for Stephen Strange, as well.

I have reached out to representatives for Mr. Hawke to see if anyone is willing to comment, and will update this story if I hear anything.
