DC Entertainment Co-Editors Dan DiDio and Jim Lee confirmed today at New York Comic-Con that Batman is a stamp collector.
For Batman fans and stamp enthusiasts today was a remarkable moment of history already. As the first day of issuance for a new limited series of Batman themed stamps, Bat-followers will have the chance to collect four different Bats and Bat-symbols, marking the character’s 75th anniversary. Thus Batman is now enjoying the same rarified pop culture air usually reserved for the likes of the Universal Monster Stable and Elvis Presley.
However, as a ceremonial press conference dedicated to the Forever Batman limited edition stamps was held at the kick-off of this year’s New York Comic-Con in honor of the momentous occasion, DC Entertainment Co-Editors Dan DiDido and Jim Lee were also on hand to make a major new reveal of the Batman’s storied canon: it turns out that Bruce Wayne, like his father, was a stamp collector.
“We’re going to say that right now that Bruce Wayne, Batman is a stamp collector,” DiDio said to applause at the event.
He explained the rational that he had talked to editors about all of the Batman stories that dealt with stamps (or stamp thieves) over the years. “And the one question that came up to us was whether or not Batman himself was a stamp collector,” the co-editor said. “And you know what? We actually had to stop and think, and talk to the writers, talk to the editors, and stop to talk about what Batman is and what he stands for, and what stamp collectors step for?”
DiDio compared this conundrum to the climactic moment of A Miracle on 34th Street when the U.S. Postal Service recognizes Kris Kringle as Santa Claus. The conclusion that they came to is if Bruce Wayne’s father was a stamp collector, then so would young Bruce.
“We thought about his relationship of his father,” DiDio said. “We pictured Thomas Wayne and Bruce Wayne sharing stamps. Then you think about Batman losing his parents, and how important his parents are to him…then we come back to the stamps themselves. If he had that connection with his father, then he must have had that to his stamps.”
Well holy commemoration, Batman, talk about your winged win for the Post Office!
The news coincides with how the Batman was one of about 25 new stamps selected this year after more than 25,000 applications for limited series. And they’re expecting this series to set a beacon in the sky for the character’s fans, because it was revealed during the event that there have been 80 million Batman stamps printed. It would seem that the Postal Service has a higher circulation than the Caped Crusader’s comic book roots these days.
