Jennifer Lawrence talks about whether Mystique qualifies as a villain now in X-Men: Apocalypse and how she is in hiding.
We’ve certainly been hearing a lot lately about Mystique’s role in X-Men: Apocalypse. This is obviously partly due to megastar actress Jennifer Lawrence currently embodying the role, but it’s also a curious dynamic worth exploring considering her newfound ambiguity at the end of X-Men: Days of Future Past. Rather than being the villain that the character traditionally is presented as in the comics, she (at least this once) listens to Charles Xavier and does not go through with a political assassination, potentially changing her future destiny as a character.
And where that destiny is headed is exactly what Jennifer Lawrence talked about when IGN asked her of Mystique’s new role in X-Men: Apocalypse during a press junket for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1.
When asked about Mystique’s position as a hero or villain, Lawrence said, “She’s very complex, so she’s kind of both [good and evil]. She’s a hero to her own race, in a way, which makes her a villain to the opposite race. So, I don’t really know where she’s going to go. I’ve had a few conversations about where we’ll find her. She obviously has to be in hiding somewhere, but I don’t know.”
Lawrence is also currently well into the last leg of promotion for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1. I’ve detailed my own thoughts on that film already with a review that you can read right here.
X-Men: Apocalypse is in theaters on May 27, 2016.
