The Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass Bourne sequel slots into Fox's former Planet of the Apes sequel spot.
NewsThe 2016 movie release schedule is seeing some more shifting today. Yesterday Fox announced the date for a planned 2016 Gambit movie and its decision to push a Matt Reeves helmed Dawn of the Planet of the Apes sequel to 2017, shifting Fantastic Four 2's release on that calendar year somewhat in the process. Now, Universal has stepped up to claim some real estate.
The studio has scooped up Fox’s abandoned spot and claimed it for its upcoming untitled Jason Bourne movie, which will see original trilogy star Matt Damon reteam with director Paul Greengrass, helmer of the last two-third of the Bourne Trilogy. The Untitled Next Bourne Chapter will hit theaters July 29, 2016.
After Damon and Greengrass departed the Bourne franchise, Universal continued without them with The Bourne Legacy, starring Jeremy Renner as new protagonist Aaron Cross. Now with the original team set to return, many have wondered what this reunion means for a planned Legacy sequel directed by Justin Lin. The Renner-led sequel is still apparently a go, with newcomer Andrew Baldwin drafting the script instead of series staple Tony Gilroy, but the Damon/Greengrass Bourne movie has reportedly leap-frogged into its originally planned 2016 release date.
There was a period in time where it looked like we’d a have no more Bournes, and now we might have more than we know what to do with.
