The 2001 cult film Wet Hot American Summer is being adapted into a series for Netflix, featuring the original cast...
NewsHere’s an exciting one - David Wain, co-writer and director of Wet Hot American Summer, has confirmed some recent rumors by tweeting “I can’t believe it, but it’s actually happening… eight episodes, original cast, on Netflix!” above an image bearing the title Wet Hot American Summer and the sub-heading First Day Of Camp.
What does this mean? Well, it would seem that a TV version of the 2001 comedy film will be coming to the online subscription service at some time in the near future. Particularly exciting – and surprising – is the "original cast" bit, which alludes to returns from such stars as Bradley Cooper, Amy Poehler, Paul Rudd and Elizabeth Banks amongst many more.
The original film focused on a group of counselors attempting to wrap things up on the last day of a summer camp. It sounds like this could be based-on an entirely unrelated camp that happened at some other point in time then, or, at a longer shot, a prequel to the original.
Deadline confirmed details on the series. Wain, along with frequent collaborator Michael Showalter created the limited series, with Wain reprising directing duties. They will both be executive producing alongside producers Howard Bernstein, Jonathan Stern and Peter Principato.
Surely, this is set be Netflix’s biggest achievement to date, talent-wise. The last time Netflix brought this much star power to a series, Arrested Development had to compromise its shooting schedule, which led to an inconsistent and uneven season. With only eight episodes likely in a half-hour format, we have high hopes for Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp.
