Producer David Ellison draws a parallel with J.J. Abrams' Star Trek as we chat about where Terminator Genisys fits.

With the release yesterday of an official endorsement from James Cameron, the tide may be turning in favor of the upcoming Terminator Genisys. The movie, which is a month away from release, hasn't seemed to have fans salivating over its arrival these part few months. Yet, inevitably, it's only when we see the film itself when we all get to find out if there's something special under the proverbial hood.

Chatting to us on the set, producer David Ellison is adamant about where the film fits, however. And it's attempting to show reverence to the series it's a part of, while very much still being its own thing.

"I think what’s important to remember when thinking about this movie is that it’s not a sequel, and it’s not a remake," Ellison told Den of Geek. "This is not T5, or a prequel to the earlier Terminator films, and it’s not a remake of the 1984 Terminator. It’s the first in a completely stand-alone trilogy based on the universe that James Cameron created."

There's certainly a parallel too with J.J. Abrams' reboot of the Star Trek movies as well. "In terms of touchstones, Star Trek 2009 - J.J. [Abrams’] first movie, is very much that. There’s a Kirk, there’s a Spock, there’ll always be an Enterprise, but obviously they’re very different characters and can go in completely different directions."

Terminator Genisys hits theaters on July 1st.
